There is a massive rocky mass in the middle of the main islands, and right near the beach was a steep incline leading up to the Ancient City of Thera. The path upwards was a zigzagging steep road that went one way then the other as it climbed up. It was quite the ordeal to walk up but I, newly athletic because I woke up that way, persevered. Once up there, it was very interesting to see the recovered remains of the ancient city, putting me in mind of the earliest levels of the first Tomb Raider.

However, I had a very bright idea to try and find a faster way down the mountain (I’m bigging it up a bit there). I mistakenly thought there was a more direct path down, and then got trapped halfway down, somewhere between certain death and a cliff face. Fun times! I was a fair way away from the road that initially took me up, so I had to shimmy my way across there. I didn’t want to be that one dumb tourist who got the authorities called in because of my clear mental deficiencies.
There was a pattern to it. Some rocks were jaggy, some rocks were slippy, others were great foot / hand holds. There were spiky plants, gravel slides, and pine trees. Now the pine trees provided excellent leverage to jump over greater gaps to the next safe-ish spot. Going from a Tomb Raider-esque location to then becoming Lara Croft was not quite the trajectory I’d considered for Sonic-themed travel, but hey, I’m adaptable. After an hour or so I managed to get back to the mountain road and then down I came. Let’s not have any more bright ideas about navigation.

I then found some improbably powerful artefacts and fought off hordes of rival corporatists and archaeologists with my dual pistols. In for a penny.
